"Gabby" Gabreski was the USAAF's top fighter ace over Europe during World War II, and would later become a Korean War ace (one of only 7 US pilots to become an ace in two different wars), as well as a Colonel during his 26 years of military service. He was the son of Polish immigrants in Pennsylvania. After his second year at Notre Dame University, Gabreski joined the USAAF, but was not a particularly successful trainee initially.
