Powered by twisted ‘torsion springs’ of rope and built in a wide variety of calibres for different purposes, the strongest could hurl large stone balls (or later, wooden and iron bolts) many hundreds of metres. In the hands of a skilled crew, the Ballista was lethally accurate, and in one form or another remained a mainstay of Roman artillery for centuries.
