Age of Sigmar: Core Book (english)

Age of Sigmar Core Book (english)

The Age of Sigmar began with the thunderous impact of the Stormcast Eternals, who arrived on the divine storm of the God-King Sigmar Heldenhammer. They are mighty heroes, carried away at the moment of their death and reforged by magic – these golden warriors are thrown into battle against all who seek to corrupt, spoil, and destroy the Mortal Realms.

While Sigmar and his Pantheon of Order strive to continue to thrive in this dark time, the Great Necromancer Nagash directs the forces of Death to claim every single soul. Kragnos, meanwhile, leads the wild hordes of Destruction in laying waste to the civilized world, and the Chaos Gods prepare to lay siege to the last uncorrupted bastions in a world of war and turmoil. This is a new epoch, a time of colossal battles and never-ending war. This is the Age of Sigmar!

The Age of Sigmar is an epic setting with countless armies, mighty heroes, and magnificent monsters. It is home to massive, realm-spanning wars between the forces of Order, Chaos, Death, and Destruction. In the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Core Rulebook, you will not only explore the diverse history of this war-torn age, but you will also find all the rules to bring these epic stories to life on the battlefield.

The Book

This 360-page hardcover book is the ultimate companion for new and experienced players of Warhammer Age of Sigmar alike, as it contains everything you need to know to collect, assemble, paint, and play with the Citadel miniatures of the Mortal Realms.

Realms of War

The Core Rulebook begins with the "Realms of War" chapter, an overview of the Warhammer hobby with concise guidance on collecting, building, and painting your miniatures, and also introduces several ways you can use them to play games of Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

An Endless War

In the first background section, explore the illustrated history of the Mortal Realms up to the present day, from the arrival of the God-King of Man to the wild Era of the Beast. It covers three great ages:

  • The Age of Myth, Sigmar's journey through the cosmos, how he met the Great Dragon Dracothion, and his exploration of the eight Mortal Realms. It tells of his awakening of the other gods, the creation of civilizations, and the fragile alliances that were forged.
  • The Age of Chaos, ushered in by the machinations of the Chaos Gods and their dominion over the Realm of Chaos, from which daemon legions poured forth, ending the peace.
  • The Age of Sigmar, in which the God-King's champions strike back against their foes in all forms. From the retribution-marked Realm-Gate Wars, which drove Chaos from many strongholds of Order, to the apocalyptic Necroquake devised by Nagash, the God of Death, to the dawning of the Era of the Beast, in which the Earthquake God leads hordes of marauding greenskins into the heartlands of civilization.

Dive into background information on each of the eight Mortal Realms – Azyr, Shyish, Aqshy, Chamon, Ghur, Ghyran, Hysh, and Ulgu – including their connections, descriptions of the indigenous civilizations that rose and fell, key events that occurred, and notable geographical features, as well as details on the Realm of Chaos, a nightmare dimension where the Chaos Gods and legions of horrifying abominations dwell.

Realms in Conflict

Learn all about the factions and alliances battling in the Mortal Realms, each with its own gallery of beautifully painted Citadel miniatures, divided into four sections corresponding to their Grand Alliances. Starting with the forces of Order, you will gain insights into each of the factions that represent the last bastion of civilization in the Eight Realms (even if they don't always get along), before engaging with their arch-enemies, the forces of Chaos. Nagash's Alliance of Death, on the other hand, seeks to claim every single soul in the Realms, while the Grand Alliance of Destruction indulges its primal instincts, embarking on a rampaging path of destruction alongside their new deity Kragnos.

The Rules

The first rules section of this book describes the basic concepts you need to fight battles in Age of Sigmar, familiarizing you with deployment, battle rounds, melee, magic, and more. The rules are presented in a clear and concise manner and are accompanied by additional designer notes, making it the most accessible rulebook in Warhammer history.

Once you've absorbed the basics, the three fundamental ways of playing and the associated battleplans for each follow.

Open Play
Let your imagination run wild in open play, as it is particularly suitable for replaying any stories or tactical challenges that come to mind, without any restrictions.
- Includes the Open War Battleplan Generator, which features pre-made maps, victory conditions, special circumstances, and stratagems.
- The combination of different options allows for over 1,200 different Open War scenarios.

Matched Play
In Matched Play, players are intended to be on equal footing, and equal chances of victory are ensured by point-based army construction rules and a competitive set of battleplans.
- Includes additional special rules, including Stealing the Initiative, and rules for additional objectives that are fulfilled either turn by turn or at the end of the battle.
- Contains much more extensive and detailed requirements and restrictions than the other game modes, including restrictions on endless spells, reinforced units, and undersized units.

Narrative Play
With a revised section of narrative play rules, let your army embark on the Path to Glory and watch it evolve across games. Earn glory, gain new abilities, and even expand your army's territory without restrictions on how, where, and when you play.
- Includes rules and notes on the 5-step process for starting a Path to Glory campaign, including: choosing faction and realm, initial size and territories, battle order, basic improvement, and first quest.
- Provides a guide on how to fight battles against opponents who are or are not participating in a Path to Glory campaign.

Conquest Unchained

The final section helps you represent the countless battlefields and endless war fought by the rulers of the Mortal Realms, including rules for the various, more unusual types of battlefields on, over, or even under which you might go into battle.

It contains three types of games designed to provide enjoyment for players, including:

  • **Siege Warfare** - all too often, warlords and conquerors in the Mortal Realms seek to drive out the inhabitants of a territory or city they wish to control, and often such a campaign ends in a brutal, merciless siege.
  • **Triumph and Treachery** - sometimes duty demands an unrestricted fight against all enemies simultaneously, and when that happens, these rules can be used to represent battles fought between three or more factions simultaneously – and all strive relentlessly to subdue their opponents and claim victory, but will you ultimately stand at the top?
  • **Tunnel Fights** - deadly, personal combat is commonplace in the Mortal Realms, as armies fight in tangled tunnel networks, treacherous Skaven scurry through urban sewers, and mind-assaulting gates open into the unpredictable Realm of Chaos.

The Core Rulebook concludes with a handy, alphabetically sorted index and a photocopyable Path to Glory army roster, battle order, and army list.
