Pokrovsky began flying I-16s with the 72nd Mixed Aviation Squadron of the Northern Fleet, flying over the Murmansk Front in the early days of the war. Like many pilots, he changed aircraft many times, from Hurricanes to Kittyhawks, Airacobras, and Yak-1bs.

Pokrovski was made a Hero of the Soviet Union in July 1943 and survived the war, credited with twelve personal victories and six shared kills across over 350 combat sorties.
