When Hitler's military machine launched its devastating attack on Poland in 1939, the SS was still in the process of transitioning from a political to a military organisation, becoming the Waffen-SS (Armed SS) and the military wing of the Nazi Party.

Well supplied and well led, the fanatical Waffen-SS was an increasingly feared fighting force. This controversial elite force was primarily accused of atrocities in Poland and on the Eastern Front during Operation Barbarossa.
