Volksgrenadiers

Formed around a core of veteran troops and armed with the new StG44, the Volksgrenadiers go into battle to defend their homeland!
After the double loss (both Army Group Centre in Operation Bagration and the Fifth Panzer Army to the Allies in Normandy), the German army raised some 78 Volksgrenadier divisions from autumn 1944 onwards.

Volksgrenadier divisions participated in the Ardennes Offensive, the defence of the Siegfried Line and the Eastern Front, as well as the final battles in Germany. Volksgrenadier divisions should not be confused with the Volkssturm, which was a completely different, poorly equipped, old, unfit, and young type of unit.

Some Volksgrenadier divisions, especially those composed of "unemployed" Wehrmacht personnel from the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe, showed high motivation and morale, which led to surprisingly good cohesion and military effectiveness against the combined Allied armies.
