Victory at Sea: Royal Navy fleet

Great Britain’s Royal Navy was the largest in the world at the outbreak of World War II. However, Britain went to war mostly with ships dating from the First World War. As the Royal Navy already possessed many powerful units, building state-of-the-art designs was limited. This meant that on the outbreak of World War II, Britain possessed far more battleships than most other nations but they featured smaller guns than those built for the most modern ships.

Although the main battle force remained concentrated in home waters, task forces were deployed in many far-flung areas, but the Royal Navy could not be strong everywhere. Though stretched, the Royal Navy lived up to its traditional ‘Can Do!’ ethos, fighting hard on all theatres.

In addition to battleship forces, the Royal Navy operated a handful of fast battlecruisers – some quite old – and aircraft carriers. These were supported by a strong cruiser force and light forces including destroyers, Motor Torpedo Boats (MTBs) and Motor Gun Boats (MGBs).

As the war progressed, aircraft carriers became increasingly important, and anti-aircraft defence was continually upgraded on all ships. Yet the big guns of the battleships and cruisers played an important part in many theatres. British capital ships were committed in the Arctic and Atlantic against German commerce raiding and in the Mediterranean against Italian forces, and ventured to the Pacific in an ill-fated attempt to stem the Japanese advance. Although the large fleet actions planned and desired by the Royal Navy’s designers did not come about during WWII, the Royal Navy adapted well to the war it was given and emerged with great honour.
