As aircraft carriers were planned but not built, the German Luftwaffe was limited to operating from airfields far from open water. Therefore, they were primarily used against ships close to mainland Europe. Nevertheless, Luftwaffe dive bombers proved devastatingly effective against Allied shipping.

Focke-Wulf FW 200 Condor: The Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor began its service life as an airliner, being the first aircraft to fly non-stop between Berlin and New York. Although employed in a variety of roles, the version featured here is a maritime patrol aircraft, used as a long-range and anti-shipping bomber. These aircraft would hunt for Allied convoys and could take on anti-submarine duties.

Junkers Ju 88: The Ju 88 was one of the most effective and versatile combat aircraft of the war. It served as a medium bomber and tank buster on land and could drop bombs or torpedoes at sea. The Ju 88's high speed allowed it to avoid interception or outrun fighters, making it far more survivable than most contemporary Allied aircraft.

Messerschmitt Bf109: Made famous in the Battle of Britain, the Bf 109 was constantly improved throughout the war to remain competitive, though it would be surpassed by the newer Fw 190. However, early in the war, it was a formidable fighter aircraft and a suitable counterpart to the Spitfire.
