Victory at Sea: USS Idaho

The USS Idaho, the third of three New Mexico-class battleships, was the fourth ship to bear this name. She was launched in June 1917 and commissioned in March 1919. She was armed with a battery of twelve 14-inch guns in four turrets and protected by heavy armor plating (13.5 inches thick on the main belt).

In the 1920s and 1930s, Idaho spent most of her time as part of the Pacific Fleet, conducting routine training exercises. In the early 1930s, she was modernized. During World War II, but before the United States entered hostilities, she was assigned to neutrality patrols protecting American shipping during the Battle of the Pacific. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, she was transferred to the Pacific Theater along with her sister ships.

For the remainder of the war, she supported amphibious operations in the Pacific, bombarding Japanese forces during the campaigns in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands and the Philippines. She also supported the invasions of Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Idaho was present in Tokyo Bay when Japan formally surrendered on September 2, 1945. Idaho was decommissioned the following year and scrapped in 1947.
