Submarines: The Gato class of submarines was the first mass-produced US submarine class of World War II, forming the majority of the US Navy's submarine fleet in that war. It was the Gato class and the successors to their design that were largely responsible for the attrition of the Japanese merchant fleet. Individual Gato-class vessels were given names of sea creatures, with the lead of their class being named after a species of small catshark.

MTBs: The Elco mounted four torpedo tubes, which, combined with their speed, made them a serious threat to larger ships. As the largest PT boat fielded by the US Navy, the Elco is also famous for having future President Kennedy commanding one such boat. Crews of these boats relied on their smaller size, speed, and maneuverability—and on darkness—to survive.
