Victory at Sea - US Navy Aircraft

After the destruction of Pearl Harbour, the Americans relied heavily on their carrier fleets’ aircraft. By the time of the Battle of Midway, the US Navy had a significant number of aircraft in service. The age of the Battleship was over, air power now reigned supreme.

Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger: The Avenger was a blessed relief for the Devastator pilots when it finally rolled off the production lines, being a good torpedo bomber, even if that task took its toll even on aircraft designed specifically for it. With a three-man crew, it at least had a fighting chance of defending itself, and a well-placed torpedo often meant that the loss of several aircraft was a worthwhile trade for a sinking enemy warship.

Grumman F4F Wildcat: Earning Grumman its reputation for building tough aircraft, the Wildcat was never going to set any speed records. However, its drum-like body and stubby wings meant it was the ideal aircraft for carrier-based operations. Popular with not only the US Navy, it also saw service with the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, where it was initially known as the Martlet.

PBY 5 Catalina: The Catalina was used for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), convoy escort, patrol bomber, and transport aircraft. Armed with five machine guns for defence, it could carry either a bomb or torpedo load and was responsible for sinking numerous U-boats in both the Atlantic and Pacific.
