Whether for troops, light vehicles, or vital
supplies, the LVT-4 Buffalo Amtrac was used by American, British, and Canadian forces in the Pacific and Northern Europe.
The "Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT)" were narrow amphibious landing craft, first deployed by the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and US Army in World War II. The LVT-4 "Buffalo" Amtrac had by far the highest production numbers, with over 8,000 vehicles manufactured. Although originally conceived as a type of
ferry, LVTs quickly became used as transport vehicles and for fire support.
Since the ramp was located at the rear, the LVT gave its passengers a much higher chance of survival until first contact with the enemy than other landing vehicles with front-door ramps.
