Hailing from the cantons of the Swiss Confederacy, the Swiss Pikemen were the main progenitors of the great mercenary revolution in infantry warfare that would later flood Europe and usher in the era of Pike & Shotte. Combining impressive martial prowess and discipline with savage bravery and a willingness to go on the offensive in their pike columns, these men were for a time the predominant force on the continent. They fought for many masters, and their weapons and gaudy clothes attracted many imitators, most famously the German Landsknechts.
