The Sturmgeschütz (StuG) III was a well-armed and armored tank, based on the proven Panzer III chassis. Originally planned as a "mobile howitzer," many StuG variants were used throughout the war, and indeed, this series was one of the few German tanks that saw action on all fronts throughout the entire war.

The StuG III had good frontal armor, and its lower silhouette made it ideal for ambushes. This also made it a difficult target for the enemy to spot. Equipped as standard with an efficient and powerful 75 mm cannon and an MG42, it was one of the most produced tank variants in the German Army.

The StuGs were welcomed by their infantry comrades and supported their attacks with high-explosive shells, or destroyed bunkers, fortified positions, and enemy tanks. The "kill count" of enemy tanks destroyed by StuGs was the highest in the entire war.
