When the German army crossed the Russian border in 1941, the army high command was convinced that they would conquer the Soviet Union in a short and swift campaign. They almost got their wish, but the heroic defense by the massive Soviet forces slowed the German army's advance.

The common Russian soldier, called "Ivan" by the Germans, endured the most terrible winter conditions in the fight against the German army. Their equipment was simple but functional, much like the soldiers themselves.
These hardened men could lie in the snow for hours before launching their attacks.
