Soviet Naval Brigade Squad (2026)

With the Soviet Navy largely bottled up in port, many sailors were pressed into service as infantrymen on the front line, often still in their black naval uniform complete with characteristic cap and striped ‘telnyashka’ undershirt.

Numerous specialised naval infantry units were formed: forty brigades and five regiments. They earned a reputation for tenacity and daring in both defensive battles and amphibious landings on the Baltic and Black Sea coasts. Thanks to their prior military experience and strong esprit de corps, they were amongst the best troops available to Soviet commanders. This is reflected in the Bolt Action tabletop game, where Naval Infantry units form part of the Hammer & Sickle Army Special Rules, bringing the ever-useful ‘Tough Fighters’ rule to the table.

German troops called the Naval Infantry ‘Black Death’ because of their black or dark blue uniforms and their fearsome reputation – a well-deserved moniker!
