Soviet Naval Brigade Medium Machine Gun Team

With the Soviet Navy largely bottled up in ports, many sailors found themselves redeployed to the front lines as infantry, often still in their black naval uniform with their distinctive peaked cap and striped “telnyashka” undershirt.

Numerous specialist Naval Infantry units were formed: forty brigades and five regiments. They acquired a reputation for tenacity and daring, both in defensive battles and in amphibious operations on the East and Black Sea coasts. Due to their prior military experience and strong esprit de corps, they were among the best troops available to Soviet commanders. This is true in the Bolt Action tabletop game too, where Naval Brigade units are part of the Hammer & Sickle army special rules, bringing the always-useful ‘Tough Fighters’ rule. This MMG team is perfect for providing suppressing fire while their comrades press the attack!

German troops called the Naval Infantry the “Black Death” due to their black or dark blue uniforms and fearsome reputation – a well-deserved nickname!
