Soviet Naval Brigade HQ

With the Soviet Navy largely bottled up in port, many sailors were used as infantry on the front lines, often still in their black naval uniforms with the distinctive cap and striped "telnyashka" undershirt.

A number of specialized naval infantry units were formed: forty brigades and five regiments. They earned a reputation for tenacity and daring, both in defensive battles and in landing operations on the Baltic and Black Sea coasts. With their previous military experience and strong esprit de corps, they were among the best troops available to Soviet commanders. This also applies to the Bolt Action tabletop game, where naval brigade units are part of the Hammer & Sickle army's special rules and bring with them the always useful "Tough Fighters" rule. The officers of the naval brigade were no exception, leading their men into battle on the front lines.

German troops called the naval infantry the "Black Death" because of their black or dark blue uniforms and their formidable reputation - a well-deserved nickname!
