Shortages meant that Soviet formations were sparsely provided with transport and rear support. A notable exception were the Pioneer Commandos. Their knowledge was too important to do without: bridge building, demolitions, construction of fortifications, and the laying and clearing of minefields. All this required skills that the conscripted masses did not possess. Assault engineers were specialists tasked with breaking down enemy positions and clearing obstacles during an advance to allow tank units to break through. This was extremely dangerous work with a high casualty rate (even by Red Army standards), and pioneer units were sometimes equipped with SN-42 body armour to give them a fighting chance.
