The standard version of the Sd.Kfz 251 half-track series was equipped with a 7.92 mm MG 34 or MG 42 machine gun, mounted in the open space above and behind the driver. A second machine gun could be mounted at the rear on an anti-aircraft mount. The Stummel replaced the front MG mount with a 75 mm L/24 gun, which was also used on early StuG III and Panzer IV.
With its characteristic "slack track" design without idler wheels and the clearly recognizable interleaved road wheel system of overlapping and nesting road wheels, common to almost all German half-tracks of this period, the 251 series had low ground pressure and better traction than most half-tracks of other nations.

Unlike Allied half-track armour, the armour plates of the 251 series were designed to prevent penetration by standard rifle bullets (such as the Mauser 7.9x57mm round). They achieved this by combining metal thickness (front plates were 14.5 mm thick) and sloped armour (V-shape, 8 mm thick).

From 1942, each Panzergrenadier battalion was supported by a Stummel platoon, which was used for direct support of other half-tracks when needed.
