Even in the early phases of World War II, the German army began to equip and support its Panzergrenadiers with armored half-tracks. They developed the Sd.Kfz 251 series, which were continuously produced by Hanomag in thousands per year and found on almost all battlefields with more than twenty variants. One of these variants was the 251/2 8cm Granatwerfer (mortar carrier). A variant of the Hanomag equipped with the standard infantry mortar. This offered several deployment options, and the mortar could support the infantry while being well protected itself. However, it was often dismounted from the half-track and assigned to the infantry. With a loading capacity of over 60 rounds for the 81mm mortar, the 251/2 8cm Granatwerfer was a solid support vehicle.
