Few vehicles of World War 2 are as instantly recognizable as the Sd.Kfz 251, or the Hanomag, as it was also known. An optimal combination of speed, protection, and firepower, ensuring infantry could be rapidly brought to the front, quickly engage enemy positions, or hold tactical objectives. Better in terrain than any truck, it enabled the infantry to keep pace with the leading tanks and provide mutual support.
In service since 1943, the Ausf. D half-track was simpler and cheaper to produce than its predecessors. An important aspect, given ongoing Allied bombing raids which made it increasingly difficult for the Wehrmacht to supply soldiers with new equipment and support. The Third Reich produced many thousands of these excellent machines, which thus served on most fronts, from the Fall of France to the last days of Berlin.
