For five centuries, the Roman Empire shaped world history, subjugating millions of people and ruling over large parts of the known world. At the beginning of the fifth century, barbarians from Germania crossed the frozen Rhine in winter and settled within the empire's borders – the beginning of difficult times for Rome. This invasion and the subsequent loss of land shook the empire and heralded the slow fall of the eagle. In response, the Romans turned their backs on Britannia, leaving the Romano-Britons living there to face their enemies alone from then on.

Over the next hundred years, the western part of the empire repeatedly had to fend off attacks from invaders who wanted to plunder the empire or settle there. Saxons, Goths, Picts, and Huns were just some of the barbarians that Rome learned to fear. The situation was hardly better in the East, where the powerful Sassanid Empire lurked, against which the Romans had already been at war for almost two hundred years.

In 476, the western part of the empire finally collapsed when its emperor was deposed by a barbarian chieftain. The subsequent period of instability went down in history as the Dark Ages and only ended in 1066.
