Black Seas: Royal Navy 3rd Rates of Renown

This box contains three Royal Navy third rate ships. In addition to plastic parts, the box includes additional metal components to create the following famous ships, all of which were present at the Battle of Trafalgar!

HMS Bellerophon - This 74-gun third rate had a long and storied history, serving throughout the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. While most of her time was spent on blockades or as convoy escort, she distinguished herself in three fleet actions: The Glorious First of June, the Battle of the Nile, and the Battle of Trafalgar. At Trafalgar, she fought a fierce battle against Spanish and French ships, sustaining heavy casualties, including the death of her captain, John Cooke.

After Trafalgar, she resumed her blockade duties around France, and between 1813 and 1814, she undertook further escort duties in North America. In 1815, assigned to blockade Rochefort, HMS Bellerophon was the ship upon which Napoleon came aboard to formally surrender to the British after his defeat at Waterloo (which had blocked his escape to America).

HMS Revenge - HMS Revenge was launched on April 13, 1805, and was a 74-gun third rate. She was part of a larger class of 74s, carrying 24-pound guns on her upper deck instead of the usual 18-pounders.

Newly commissioned and under the command of Captain Robert Moorsom, she served at the Battle of Trafalgar in Admiral Collingwood's column. She served until 1842.

HMS Tonnant - An 80-gun Royal Navy third rate ship of the line, HMS Tonnant was originally the lead ship of the French Tonnant class, captured by the British at the Siege of Toulon (August 1793), recaptured by the French during the breaking of the siege (December 1793), and then recaptured by Horatio Nelson's fleet in Aboukir Bay during the Battle of the Nile (August 1, 1978). She went on to fight in the Battle of Trafalgar against the French.

Tonnant was the flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane during most of the Chesapeake Bay campaigns in the War of 1812. Of particular note, Francis Scott Key dined aboard the Tonnant as part of negotiations for the release of prisoners. As a result of their knowledge of the impending attack on Baltimore at Fort McHenry, he and his companions were not allowed to return until after the attack. Witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry, Key wrote the poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry," which later became "The Star Spangled Banner."
