First-century BC Roman politics were a tense and often violent affair, with the Republic reeling from the Social War against its Italian allies, and numerous smaller civil conflicts being fought between powerful magnates – and that’s before we even consider the fighting against foreign enemies!

Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla were both men very much in the mould of their age – powerful and astute politicians, diplomats, and military commanders, not afraid of ruthless conquest to achieve their own and Rome’s ends. Both held high political office, fighting both overseas against the enemies of Rome, and on Italian soil against each other. The older Marius held the consulship no less than seven times, whilst Sulla won the First Mithridatic War and became the first man to forcibly seize dictatorial power in Rome, setting a precedent that would lead to centuries of violence.

Our miniatures depict both men mounted and in martial attire, leading their men into battle. Exactly where that battle takes place and against whom, is for you to decide.
