The P-47 Thunderbolt was a versatile US fighter aircraft manufactured between 1941 and 1945 and used in both the Mediterranean and Pacific theatres. In addition to eight wing-mounted .50 caliber machine guns, it could carry five-inch rockets or a bomb load of up to 2500 pounds. When fully loaded in this way, the fighter was among the heaviest of the entire war. However, this also meant that it could perform a wide range of tasks – it could be used both as an escort fighter for short to medium distances and as a ground attack fighter.
