RAUS! Waffen-SS debussing Hanomag

Germany’s early successes in armoured warfare relied on the intelligent use of combined arms: tanks, artillery, infantry and even aircraft working together to outmanoeuvre and overwhelm static and confused enemy forces. It’s true the mighty German war machine marched into war, but not the Panzergrenadiers!

Aboard trucks or tanks or, as our troop here, in mighty armoured half-tracks, the Panzergrenadiers cleared the way for the main assaults to come. Staying close to their supporting tanks, they used their mobility to quickly advance on the battlefield, overwhelming enemy positions, or outflanking well-defended positions for the ‘stubble-hoppers’ to clean up.

These Panzergrenadiers are seen in full action, dismounting from their Hanomag half-track to continue a close assault on foot. Panzergrenadiers were also known to fire from the vehicle at some speed, though most assaults were done on foot with the vehicle’s machine guns adding extra fire in the final approach.
