Black Powder: Prussian Uhlans

Prussia under Frederick the Great was renowned for its superb infantry. Less well-known is the effectiveness of Prussian cavalry on 19th-century European battlefields. At the start of the Napoleonic Wars, Bonaparte himself warned his generals about the excellent Prussian cavalry.

The well-trained and disciplined Prussian horse formed regiments of Cuirassiers, Dragoons, Hussars, and Lancers during the Hundred Days' Campaign, with the lighter cavalry intended for raiding and skirmishing, but in reality taking their place in the main battle lines during positional warfare.

The Uhlans, or Lancers, of the Prussian army, along with the Dragoon and Cuirassier units, fulfilled both the role of light cavalry and line shock troops. Equipped with a deadly 9-foot lance, they were an imposing sight. It was the Uhlans who rescued Marshal Blücher when he was unhorsed at Ligny.

In the late war, the Uhlans predominantly wore simple dark blue uniforms and practical equipment. At the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, all units had their lance pennons with a black-and-white swallowtail pattern.
