Black Powder: Prussian Landwehr cavalry

Known for their excellent infantry under Frederick the Great, Prussia also fielded highly effective Prussian cavalry on 19th-century European battlefields.

Established in 1813, the Landwehr cavalry was a vast force of mounted, well-drilled militia, similar in form to their infantry counterparts. The force was a tremendous asset to the Prussian war machine, eventually numbering over thirty regiments by the Hundred Days Campaign.

The Landwehr cavalry wore a dark blue Litewka long coat with collar and cuffs in provincial colours. Headwear was a mix of traditional field caps and shakos - often made of oilcloth and with a white cross painted on them. Lance pennons could vary, often mirroring the uniform facings halved with white, but by the time of Waterloo, all Landwehr cavalry had switched to the standard black and white pennons.

Armed with lances, the Landwehr cavalry fought well in the field and comprised around 40% of Blücher's cavalry at Waterloo - a great opportunity to field many of these brave sons of Prussia on the tabletop!
