Polish Winged Hussars Regiment

The Polish Winged Hussars are one of the most famous and distinctive units in history. They emerged from exiled light cavalry from the Balkans, who arrived in Poland in the early 16th century. The Polish Winged Hussars were significantly more heavily armoured than the Balkan cavalry from which they evolved. They fought as shock cavalry, delivering devastating charges with long lances. The famous 'wings' were designed to enhance the terror of their charge; the sight of galloping horsemen with 20-foot lances and massive wings was a sight designed to terrify even the bravest footsoldier. On the battlefield, groups of Hussars fought together as units known as a 'kopia'. The Winged Hussars saw their heyday in the 17th century, winning dramatic battles against Poland's many enemies. Their most famous victory was their dramatic cavalry charge when they relieved Vienna from the Ottomans in 1683.
