Polish-Lithuanian Mercenary Pikemen

Alongside the Hadyuk infantry, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth often employed foreign mercenaries to fill gaps in their native troop strength. These troops were often recruited from the German states, but also from local levies. Tactically, the Poles used their infantry differently from other European nations (apart from the Ottomans, who fought similarly).

The Poles (and the Ottomans) rarely used pikes on the battlefield, as they used infantry to support their cavalry, meaning the infantry fired or provided fire support while the cavalry attacked and manoeuvred. The Poles and their eastern rivals often had fast, light cavalry; massed pike blocks were less effective on the battlefield because the cavalry fought differently from the mounted troops of Western European armies. However, these miniatures enrich any Polish army on the gaming table and serve as a visually striking element compared to the rest of the army.
