The wars of the 17th Century saw great numbers of cavalry units employed. Kitted out with helmet and cuirass, they were expected to get up close and personal with the enemy, riding them down at a fast pace. The heavy cavalry of the Cuirassiers came equipped in blackened steel armour, resistant to most blades and shot. Cuirassiers were used en masse as shock troops in the Thirty Years War and were a feared opponent. Dragoons were found on all sides and were able to dismount to hold tactical positions such as bridges, but could also fire from the saddle.

All armies of the period used as much artillery as they could afford, from fearsome large sakers to small field guns such as the falconet which spat a lethal hail of shot at close quarters.
