The baggage trains required by an army on the move against an enemy force could be huge, consisting of hundreds of carts and wagons loaded with essentials for a campaign such as powder, shot, food, drink, fodder etc. Whilst most of the baggage was civilian it presented a valuable prize to marauding enemy cavalry and was often fortified or guarded by pike & shot or firelock companies.
