Panzer III

From 1940 to 1942, the Panzer III was one of Germany's most important battle tanks. During the Western Campaign and on the Eastern Front, it initially formed the backbone of the Wehrmacht's armored units. The first models from 1936, then still known as the "Zugführerwagen" (platoon commander's vehicle), were ahead of their time. As the war progressed, its standard armament, the 3.7 cm cannon, was replaced by the more powerful 5 cm KwK 38 L/42 and KwK 38 L/60 cannons. The late, and also last, N-variant from 1942/43 even received the 7.5 cm KwK 37 cannon.
