Pancerni Heavy Cavalry Regiment

The "towarzysz pancerny" (armored companions), often shortened to just "pancerni", were a medium cavalry that were not as heavily armed or armored as the Winged Hussars. They were notable for wearing mail shirts throughout the Pike & Shotte era, giving them the look of an earlier age. Despite their somewhat old-fashioned appearance, they were very effective troops, using their speed to assault their opponents' flanks; their armour and hand weapons giving them an advantage in close-quarters combat.

Often they would support the charge of the Winged Hussars, taking advantage of the gaps created by the Hussars and pursuing fleeing troops. The Polish army could be brutally effective: skilled Hajduks would provide covering fire as the Winged Hussars devastated enemy formations with their charges, whereupon the Pancerni cavalry would be quick to exploit any gaps and harry the routed enemy formations.
