The comparatively long range of the P-38 Lightning proved invaluable in the Pacific theatre and as an escort during low-level raids over occupied Europe, and it was highly successful as a ground attack fighter as well.

The twin-engined fighter saw its greatest use and successes in the Pacific theatre. Although it could not out-turn the A6M Zero at speeds under 200 mph, its speed and rate of climb enabled it to make multiple high-speed passes in combat, and the armour of Japanese aircraft was more vulnerable than German aircraft to the P-38’s tight gun groupings.

It was P-38s that were involved in the intercept mission that took the life of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbor. This mission involved 16 P-38G Lightnings meeting two G4M ‘Betty’ transports and six escorting Zeros. Both transports were lost, as were two Zeros, for the loss of one P-38.
