The 3rd Battalion, struck from all official records, was an example of Brigadier General Alan Campbell's view: "I collected several detachments of salvaged men from Sir J. Moore's Army, whom I found scattered in every direction, without the bare necessities, and some of them committing all sorts of excesses that could make the name of a British soldier hateful in the nation." During the Douro campaign and the capture of Oporto in 1809, the 3rd found itself there, crossing bayonets with the infamous French Regiment les Bouchers (the Butchers). The bloody encounter was also notable for the savage dogfight between Duchess, the 3rd Battalion’s bull terrier mascot, and the French poodle Fifi, with both animals leaving their marks.
