Napoleonic Spanish Infantry (2nd & 3rd Battalions) 1805-1811

Napoleon Bonaparte's seemingly invincible French army suffered their first defeat in the Napoleonic Wars at Baylen in 1808 at the hands of the Spanish army. This was arguably the high point of the Spanish army's performance during the wars.

History has not looked back on Spain's armies during the Napoleonic wars in a very positive light. They suffered many defeats but also tied down large numbers of French troops in a cruel war that sapped the strength of countless French units, only too keen to leave a country where they were so hated. Although the vicious Spanish guerrillas wrought devastation on their French foes, the Spanish regulars also inflicted thousands of casualties on their home soil.

Most regiments fielded two battalions – the second and third battalions consisted solely of fusiliers, carrying the distinctive white Sencilla (or Ordenanza) flag bearing a red Bourbon saltire. We know many gamers like to field two flags in a battalion, whatever history says, so we've included two ensign figures. If you are more historically minded, Warlord Games has added an extra fusilier at no charge!

A Spanish army looks magnificent on the tabletop, and although generally of poor quality, quantity has a quality all of its own, and the Spanish troops improved as the war went on. So make sure your units have been blessed by the priest before committing them to driving Boney's hated invaders from Mother Spain!
