Heirs to a long and proud martial tradition, Spain was initially an ally of France in the early Napoleonic wars before being invaded by the French in 1808 and having Joseph Bonaparte installed as a puppet king. With the majority of the Spanish people rejecting and bitterly fighting French rule, the Spanish army saw service alongside their British allies. An important component of that army was the artillery. Light howitzers were used with 'Horse Artillery', able to be moved quickly to where they were most needed, then be set in motion to fire their shells in an arc over the heads of friendly troops to land amongst the enemy – with deadly effect.
