An inheritor of a long and proud martial tradition, Spain was initially an ally of France in the early Napoleonic wars before being occupied by the French in 1808 and having Joseph Bonaparte installed as a puppet king. With the majority of Spaniards rejecting and bitterly fighting French rule, the Spanish army came to be deployed alongside their British allies. A vital component of this army was the artillery. 'Horse' artillery, consisting of highly mobile light guns, was intended to rush across the battlefield to where it was most needed and often proved decisive in repelling enemy attacks or supporting assaults.
