With the emergence of line tactics, light troops were needed for reconnaissance, security, or outpost duties. They could operate independently of rigid line tactics and received tactical instructions to support them.

Light infantry also gained great importance among Napoleon's troops and their column tactics. Initially organized only in separate regiments or battalions, skirmishers were soon assigned to all battalions.
