The latest units of Napoleon’s legendary Imperial Guard to be raised were known as the ‘Young Guard’ and swelled to well over a dozen regiments, with light infantry Tirailleur and Voltigeur regiments being particularly numerous. They received higher pay than the ‘line’ troops and were generally treated more favourably across the board. In return, they were expected to show extreme bravery in battle and unwavering loyalty to Napoleon, fighting where the battle was fiercest and often refusing to surrender.
