The youngest units raised for Napoleon's famed Imperial Guard were known as the Young Guard, and swelled to well over a dozen regiments, with the light infantry of the Tirailleurs and Voltigeurs being especially numerous. They received higher pay than 'line' troops and were generally given preferential treatment. In return, they were expected to show the utmost bravery in battle and unswerving loyalty to Napoleon - and this goes double for their officers, who had to lead and motivate their men amidst the thickest of fighting!
