Designed by Sir William Congreve in 1808, based on rockets captured in the Indian state of Mysore, the eponymous Congreve rocket consisted of an iron sheet tube filled with gunpowder, fitted with an explosive shell and attached to a long wooden stick. They were fired from racks or frames, and although somewhat unreliable and sometimes terrifyingly inaccurate, they had the great advantage of being both powerful and fearsome, as well as much easier to transport and supply than a comparable cannon battery. During the Napoleonic Wars, they were used in increasing numbers and, due to their size and power, developed into a truly deadly weapon.
