The sleek J2M Raiden (Thunderbolt) was designed as an interceptor for bombers. It proved to be a dangerous adversary but struggled to reach the high-flying B29 Superfortresses, which were its true prey.

After a year spent resolving serious engine problems, the sleek Mitsubishi J2M Raiden ("Thunderbolt"), dubbed "Jack" by the Allies, finally reached front-line squadrons in February 1944. The machine had primarily been conceived to counter the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, but its poor engine performance continued to plague pilots in this task. Despite this, the aircraft was an intimidating opponent when Japanese pilots deployed its four-cannon armament and its dive and zoom tactics with great success.

J2Ms were deployed from Guam and Saipan, and a small number of aircraft were based in the Philippines. Some Raidens were stationed at the selected airfields of Genzan (Wonsan), Ranan (Nanam), Funei (Nuren), and Rashin (Najin) to combat Soviet naval air units.
