The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was a fast, modern fighter, but it lacked armor for the pilot. When the Zero was in the hands of aggressive and well-trained pilots, this weakness was hardly noticeable. Fast and agile and with an extremely long range, it proved to be a threat to the Allies in the early stages of the Pacific War.

Pilots called it "Reisen" (Zero-Fighter; the "0" came from the last digit of the imperial year 2600 in which the aircraft was put into service), the official Allied designation was "Zeke", although colloquially "Zero" also entered general Allied usage.

The A6M remains the most famous Japanese fighter aircraft of World War II. It was the world's first carrier-borne fighter aircraft to be considered equal to its land-based counterpart. The lack of an adequate successor in the course of technological progress meant that the aircraft was developed and produced in large numbers long after its effective limits had been reached and surpassed by superior Allied aircraft.
