The Sherman was the most widely used tank in the American army. The breakthrough on the beaches of Normandy and the conquest of Berlin would probably never have been achieved so quickly without this extensive armored support. Although it had its weaknesses and was thus nicknamed "Tommy Cooker" by the Germans, its impressive firepower and large numbers ensured the Allies' victory over the Germans.
