As the war progressed, more and more members of the Luftwaffe were called up into the newly formed Luftwaffe Field Divisions. 21 divisions were established, each with a target strength of 12,500 men. They wore the distinctive blue-grey uniforms of the Luftwaffe, and some even donned the M1942 camouflage jacket or Zeltbahn capes. Despite poor field training, they fought bravely in Normandy, Italy, and on the Russian Front. The average age of soldiers in these units was 30 years – much older than other front-line troops. These circumstances partly led to more losses than in regular "field units". Nevertheless, the units of the Luftwaffe Field Division received a total of 18 of the coveted Knight's Crosses during their entire service.
