The KV-1 Heavy Tank

The KV-1 is a monstrous vehicle, weighing in at 45 tonnes. One of the first Russian heavy tanks to be fielded in WWII, it was famed for its near-impenetrable armour. German anti-tank weaponry of the time could barely scratch its armour, and only a lack of training and manoeuvrability allowed it to succumb to superior German tactics.

Such was its size, the KV-1 could literally crush anything in its path, causing firing lines and strongholds to be abandoned at its very sight. The 76.2mm gun still punched through any current German armour, making it virtually unstoppable in 1941.

The KV-1 was the example of what a heavy tank could or should be: near-indestructible and designed to instill terror in the enemy. Although it fell out of favour in later years, it was used as the basis for the next generation of heavy tanks.
