U-Boats: The Type IX U-boat was the most successful U-boat of the war, with an average sinking of over 100,000 tons per vessel. A Type IX U-boat, U-107, was the most successful convoy patrol of the war, sinking nearly 100,000 tons of shipping off Freetown in Africa. The latest variants of this design were able to achieve ranges of over 23,000 miles, allowing them to range far and wide in search of convoys, whilst their heavy torpedo load allowed them to keep up with a convoy, attacking night after night.

MTBs: The R1 Class of R-boats (from the German Räumboot, meaning minesweeper) were intended to be used as a shallow-water minesweeper, but over the course of the war, it became a multi-purpose vessel. Its duties expanded to include patrol, anti-submarine and convoy escort, minelayers, and rescue missions. Some R-boat classes, such as the R310, were fitted with torpedo tubes, although their performance was very modest compared to boats specifically designed for the role.

The ultimate S-boat to be available in significant numbers was the S-100 class, which entered production from 1943 and was considered the finest fast attack boat of its day. The S-100 Class earned the nickname “Calotte,” as they featured a rounded armoured bridge. They were powered by three Daimler-Benz engines, giving them a combined horsepower of around 7,500 hp and providing an excellent top speed of 48 knots.
